The Purpose of a Sideboard

The term "sideboard" may be confusing to many people, especially those of younger generations. Most people do not recognize the term right off but once a sideboard is pointed out to them, they get the general idea quickly. When you break down the word, it actually explains everything. A sideboard is simply another name for a buffet table and was first created for use in upscale dining rooms. These tables, which were exclusively built from "boards" of wood, were never the main dining table; instead, they were set up along the wall and off to the "side." Thus, the term "sideboard" was created in order to describe this piece of fashionable dining room furniture and many families had at least one or two to frame their dining halls.

The first sideboards were not built until the 18th century. Before this date, families were not wealthy enough to build a room dedicated exclusively to dining. The Europeans used walnut, oak, and pine to build the first sideboards; the Americans later used pine and poplar.  Since these early buffet tables were handcrafted, they often had beautiful designs such as serpentine curved fronts, tapered legs, and intricate patterns painted on the surface. They were not only for decoration, however, people often used them to serve food, display art items, and store extra tableware in the cabinets below.

Discount sideboards were not a possibility in that century; only the wealthier families could afford to have a dining room and therefore, could afford to purchase the items to furnish it properly. Today however, one can find discount sideboards with no trouble at all! The sideboard no longer needs to be used only in the dining room, although this room still sees its fair share of buffet tables. Other people have opted to place a sideboard in the living room and use it to store extra blankets and pillows or the children's toys and games. Another popular place for a sideboard is in the hallway. It is a great surface for you to put your keys and purse at the end of the day, as well as a great location to store pieces of winter clothing.
