Dining Room Cabinets and the History of the Sandwich

Discount dining room cabinets are incredibly helpful pieces of furniture. These are wonderful for not only decoration but also they are great for storing dining room items such as tablecloths, tableware, candles, and place mats. If your cabinet sits at waist level, it is the perfect place to set out appetizers and desserts especially when you are hosting a party. These useful pieces of furniture have not been around forever though. This fact might be shocking because it is difficult to image people surviving without discount dining room cabinets. However, people suffered for centuries without dining room cabinets but, when you consider that the sandwich had not even been invented yet; can you see why it might have happened?

Have you ever heard the story about the invention of the sandwich? Most people may never consider that the sandwich needed to be invented because it is such a common food item today. Believe it or not, though, the sandwich was not popular before the 19th century. People often ate their different food items separately. Bread was eaten with butter, meat was consumed on its own, and salad was hardly served at all. The thought of putting lettuce, slices of tomato, and pieces of meat between two slices of bread was a bizarre concept. People claim that the Jewish sage Hillel the Elder created the earliest form of the sandwich by wrapping pieces of lamb and herbs together in matzo (flat bread) during Passover. This idea, however, did not catch on in the general population until the Earl of Sandwich made it famous.

The story goes that the Earl was incredibly fond of cards, and was usually seated next to a wood buffet. One problem he encountered every time he tried to play was greasy fingers due to the meat he was trying to eat. Whether it was his idea or someone else's suggestion, no one knows for sure, but he started putting the meat between two pieces of bread which saved his fingers and the cards from the grease. Soon other aristocrats followed his lead and the sandwich grew in popularity. When the industrial revolution hit, workers needed a quick, nutritious meal to take with them to work. The sandwich, as we know it today, took off and is now a staple lunch item around the world.

To pay homage to the sandwich, you should go make yourself one. In order to pay homage to the cabinet, though, you should go online to ebuffet.com! You will find amazing discount dining room cabinets and kitchen hutches and you will have to order one for your home today!
